I get asked all the time, especially by friends and visitors to Cuchara, if the ski mountain is open for business. Since it was abandoned so many years ago, not many people know it is actually open for your enjoyment and recreation.
My daughter’s husband, Jamie Bittle was one of the first to hike to the top of the ski mountain in 2016 and record his journey and the snowboarding trip down the mountain. Jamie is in excellent shape in his 20’s and considered get to the top just an ordinary days’ workout to stay in shape.

Recently, the Cuchara Foundation was approached by a local newspaper in Trinidad, Tidbits, to advertise in their weekly, local paper. The Cuchara Foundation has done such a good job raising funds to revamp the Mountain Park, but little had been done in the way of advertising the park is open for fun and recreation. I too, was a little surprised at how much there is to do at the mountain park during the winter!
There is a groomed snow shoeing/Nordic/cross country skiing trail, and plenty of room to sled. You can also take a hike up to run 3, 4 or 5 to ski or snowboard down the mountain. And, lately we have had nearly 100 inches of snow since September~
And, it is all free! If you are looking for a day to spend with the family outdoors, the Cuchara Mountain Park is a fabulous local hangout. Lately while snow shoeing with a group of rounders, I counted more than 25 cars in the parking lot!
So, come on up, spend the day, and make memories that will last a lifetime! And if you make your own video would love to see it!
