Joy in Little Things

What are 5 everyday things that bring you happiness?

When I wake up in the morning, one of my dogs loves to curl up next to me, the minute I open my eyes. He’s so adoring and he only wants me to pet him until I feel able enough to get up and start my day. We developed this little routine over 3 years ago and it is something I look forward to every day. It’s the little things that bring me joy!

The other is that first cup of coffee. The taste of a cup of Joe first thing, to start my day, is something I can’t do without.

The other small thing that starts my day on a high note, is opening the curtains to reveal the view of the mountains from my front windows. I am always thrilled to see they remain the same, steady and majestic, presence day after day. Even though they change with the seasons, the morning view when I open my eyes assures me that all is right with the world, and that my world, as I know it, is safe and still.

My other favorite thing is tickling my grandchildren and listening to them giggle. I love those little belly laughs!

And as simple as it may seem, I love sitting at my breakfast table looking out over the ski mountain, and watching the birds as they come to my feeders. It took me a year to learn each species but I routinely have Rosie Finches, Evening Grosbek’s, Chipping Sparrows, Chickadee’s, and Nuthatch. And let’s not forget the Hummingbirds! They are some of my favorite.

I enjoy writing everyday in my journal and at the end of each week, I go back and review the previous week. It keeps me grounded and watchful for things to be grateful for each day.

I also love listening to music and cooking. Maybe I like cooking so much because I love to eat? But, it is a joy for me to prepare a meal for others and watch them enjoy my creation!

As I am writing, it occurs to me this all sounds a bit lazy, like all I do is sit in a rocking chair and rock in my old age. I do take life slower than I used to, but slow, as in take time to smell the roses. There’s nothing wrong with taking time to appreciate that which we’ve been given. And I can always find a way to reconnect to myself and to others when I commune with nature, and small children and animals.
